An easy day from Mestia into the Chalaadi valley — a forest trail along the Mestiachala River to the snout of the Chalaadi Glacier. Around 8 km return, few climbs. Ideal for families and first days.

The place

Overview

The gentlest way to stand under a glacier.

After a short transfer to the trailhead, the path follows the river through birch and pine forest to the moraine below the glacier. The walking is easy underfoot until the last stretch of rock near the ice.

It is the best first hike in Svaneti — low effort, big payoff, and back in Mestia by mid-afternoon. Sturdy shoes are enough; the guide sets the pace for the group, families included.

The Chalaadi Glacier hike — Svaneti's easiest glacier day

The Chalaadi Glacier hike is the perfect gentle introduction to Svan mountain walking — an easy, mostly flat day from near Mestia that leads through birch forest and along the Mestiachala river to the snout of the Chalaadi glacier. It suits families, first-time hikers and anyone wanting a relaxed half- to full-day out.

You cross a footbridge over the river and follow the valley to a boulder field beneath the ice, where the glacier tumbles down from the flanks of Mount Ushba. It is a striking, accessible glimpse of the high Caucasus without any strenuous climbing.

Good to know

Allow a relaxed half to full day depending on where you start walking. Sturdy shoes are enough; there is no technical terrain. It pairs well with a bigger day like the Koruldi Lakes or the Mestia to Ushguli trek.
